    Sunday 28 September 2008, 10am-5pm

If you are anywhere near Canberra this week you should try to make it to this very special event set up to celebrate the International Year of Languages.

Apart from more than two dozen stalls representing organisations and language learning opportunities, and as well as information on up to 20 weekend ethnic schools representing a wide range of languages, there is a spectacular range of workshops and seminars on language topics.

There are so many sessions there will sometimes be up to six running simultaneously in different venues.

I don’t know how you choose between sessions on topics as diverse as reviving and preserving indigenous languages, how the latest technology can help language learning, the role of non-verbal languages, oral language learning, written language learning, early childhood education, adult education, policy development, careers information – it’s an amazing line-up.

LOTE@HOME is an innovative way for parents to participate with their kids as they all learn a second language, devised by a parent who was unable to identify an approach to learning a language other than English that focused on a home, family-based setting.

In the LOTE@HOME pack, there’s a set of 50+ laminated cards for rooms in the home. Families attach the cards to the thing they refer to – the stove, the door, the dishwasher, the cupboard, the bath, the tap and so on. There are cards for the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen.

Family members use the words on the cards, mixed in with their usual language, to make sentences. So for example, a parent could say to a child “… please close ‘la porta’ when you come in …” Gradually, everyone will absorb the Italian word for ‘door’. And so it goes with all the other cards.

The Mandarin Stars program provides immensely enjoyable Mandarin classes for children age 1 to 5 in a structured playgroup with music, movement, singing, dramatic play, art and craft, story telling, games and more in a truly multi-cultural environment!

Our Mandarin Stars develop cognitive, gross and fine motor skills whilst being immersed in the Mandarin language. It’s a playgroup with a difference and designed for families of all nationalities.

Our curriculum has been inspired by Mandarin programs already taught in private, international Pre-schools, Kindergartens and Mandarin Playgroups in Hong Kong and China. With this inspiration, we have blended the Australian ‘playgroup’ approach in delivering our program and as a result, have created stimulating, fun mandarin classes for children age 1 to 5 years.
